Many of Ali’s paintings have a point of departure in some person or situation known to her, which also stands for the wider human experience. The above detail is from ‘Desperate Men’, actually a story of one man’s desperation finding solace, help and healing.
Another picture beginning with thoughts about young people, this time under intense pressure. At what point might a negative tipping point occur, leading to irreversible harm? A call to listen to our children, and also, as in the outcome imagined here, to see them through to a point where life and the desire for life are reasserted.
The tragedy of one gifted young man leaving home’s security and setting out full of energy and promise, only to die on a mountain, prompted the thoughts behind this picture. Could one re-imagine someone setting out, not just with high energy and expectation, but stepping into the unknown with faith and a sense of purpose?
